Overall, three stars.
Hook, four stars.
The tension of the narrative lies in the transition from social insecurity to a high-stakes supernatural contract; Tem must enter the caves and face a literal monster to secure her family’s future. This creates an immediate, visceral sense of urgency as she moves from the safety of the village into a realm where the stakes are both physical and spiritual.
Writing Style, three stars.
The prose is polished but occasionally relies on labels rather than rendering. The description of the ritual oils—”woodland softness” and “floral depth”—functions as category-based labeling, which fails to evoke a specific scent for the reader. Additionally, much of Tem’s internal conflict is stated through direct narration regarding her feelings of inadequacy rather than being revealed through physical manifestations or nuanced imagery. While the atmosphere is effectively built, these instances of telling over showing create a slight distance between the reader and the character’s immediate emotional reality.
Standout Passage.
The description of the freckles on Tem’s palms as a constellation—a precise image that captures her inherent worth in contrast to her feelings of being “dirty.” It provides an evocative moment of beauty that grounds the character’s identity before she faces the uncertainty of the cave.
